My biggest issue is gallant and the players ran out the same game plan all game. Never adjusted. It’s not like they haven’t played the canes before. Short quick passes work. Not the stretch pass.

For as good as miller is offensively he might be their worst dman in his own zone. Always out of position. They need to adjust next game.

Canes played like they had lost 6 of last 7 to Rangers and were pissed about it

I'm gonna disagree a little bit. Canes tend to have difficulty defending the rush and their high-pressure attack can leave them vulnerable to odd man rushes if you can get the puck by the first wave of attackers quickly.

If they get on you and get the puck in your emd though, you definitely need the wings to come down and support hard though otherwise you're never getting it out of your end.

That’s exactly what I’m saying short quick passes and have the fwds closer to their own blue line. They were trying these long outlet passes that didn’t work at all. Canes played a very good defensive game

I don’t really think we need to make broad overreactions to the game last night. Tie game late in the 3rd and the canes found a way to win. Move on, can’t win them all

No doubt. A few mistakes, try and tighten things up and get ready for tomorrow. Carolina is a good team and another playoff series with them would be a battle

I'd barely even heard of Jalen Chatfield and out of nowhere he becomes Bobby Orr for a moment

Carolina excels at finding these diamonds in the rough

Even first, Canes turned up the heat in the 2nd but mostly stayed on the outside.

Trocheck's shot on Aho after the whistle pissed them off though and suddenly CAR started going to the front of the net.

Had a cup of coffee in Vancouver but man, the work Tim Gleason has done with him (and Skjei) is unbelievable.

The Rangers never had the puck in the 2nd period. We previously discussed something like this. Congrats on bludgeoning Igor. Would've been nice if they gave him some help.

Have to adjust their breakout. Long passes don’t work. Quick passes and transition does.

Igor looked top notch again. Nice to see

Canes are a great defensive team. The Rangers need short passes, quick dumps and puck retrieval. Our defense is so inconsistent. I think most of our playoff series will go 6-7 games.

Good, hard fought game against a great team. We played into their system and they came out on top. No reason to overthink this one. One team wins, one team loses. It happens.

One quick comment about last night: Our skill level was still on display. We really can move the puck well when we get going. Carolina just plays such a suffocating game. Need to play a more tighter passing style to get by them in the neutral zone.

Time to make slight adjustments in our game plan and come back to get these guys on Thursday.

Think about this: Zib, Kreider, Kane, Panarin, Fox all had sub-par games. If just one of them plays a little better, we might have a different outcome. That’s how close the game was.

Did they have sub par games or did the Canes defense just stifle them??

Watching last night, I thought at one point that every once in a while we should have Bread or Kane or Fox just stick handle right through the neutral zone. The 'Canes defense is designed to pick off those passes between the blue lines, long and short. Fake those passes and keep right on going. Maybe have to dump it from the blue line in, if the D step up.
You can't just make the conventional play against Carolina. They're too good and too disciplined.

This feels like a Confucius moment

Probably a bit of both. All of those guys are capable of playing better. Credit to the Canes for playing strong defense.

Great summary Jan!

Just have to disagree where the game turned:

For the life of me, I can't figure out why Miller left his man to go into the corner with Trouba to go double the Canes player. Spot that Miller vacated is where they scored from. A 2-1 game and crowd was buzzing became 2-2 on that bone-headed play and MSG got real quiet. To me, that's where the game turned...

On to Carolina!

They are a very flawed pair. Miller is usually out of position. Bad awareness in his own zone. Trouba is better positionally, just not great at zone exits. For whatever reason they dont really play well together in spite of being a pair for this long. Miller has a very enticing ceiling he is just better served on the 3rd pair currently bc of the issues in his own zone. Problem is they have nobody better to slot up there

I can guarantee you the other 31 teams would love a pair like Miller and Trouba. You literally analyze every mistake those two make. They wouldn’t be a playoff team without either guy. It’s really that simple

Which is crazy, cause before they went to western Canada and during the Canucks game, Miller was rolling. And before that stretch started, Miller was the better of the two defensively according to the metrics. Idk what's happening with him.
